life drawing f '11 | clothing

Tossa combined the use of a middle ground shadow, with contour, leaving out touches of line. (Not everything has to be so clearly indicated.) Yet, the addition of a cast shadow in the drawing on the left, gave not only a sense of placement, but of movement.

Jim uses the side of the charcoal, instead of line, to show the light. Notice how he gives more space around his center of interest, and how simply he renders the face. There is no fight over where to focus our attention.

Is it any wonder that Brigitte shows clothing with such grace and movement? Everyone in class was drawn to the line, at the bottom of the dress. Also, how about the simplicity of the arms and of the legs?

The softened texture of the dress, along with the direct light on a floppy hat, both add to this soulful drawing by Alex.
