With a visit to the Minimalism/Maximalism show, at the FIT museum, my students practice hatching. Using parallel lines to create tones and shadows, the technique lends itself well to sketching with either a pen, or a graphite pencil.

With a second class on portraiture, the emphasis is on clothing. Or rather students choose which of the two is the focus. Most often it is the portrait, so then all manner of dress - or guitar - takes a back seat.
