Hatching is one of the more challenging lessons, when values of light and shadow are rendered, with the even lines of a pen, or the tip of a pencil. While we begin the semester, by forming the simple surface of a cube and a cylinder, by the last class, Molly shows her determination to improve. A skillful drawing of her boss's "craggy" face, is included in the final project.

Some years ago, I learned to not control either the process or outcome of the final drawing project. It is for the student to choose. Whether or not it reflects their major course of study, the class feedback and support can be invaluable, adding to the excitement of following through on some pretty unique ideas. Two such examples are seen below:


Money envelopes are traditionally given as gifts for the Chinese New Year. This being the year of the pig, Yuxuan's interpretation not only highlights her exuberant personality, but also addresses an absence of diversity, in the U.S. card market:

 From the time she was born, Tabitha lived in 13 different houses. 

"After looking through childhood photographs over Thanksgiving, with my family, I decided I wanted this piece to be an abstract self-portrait: to emphasize how my mom's unique eye for design has influenced how I connect with social spaces."

A student once said that she did not know how to be creative. So this semester, I added a class. It started with video on the creative process, followed up by a walk through my own drawings, along with an introduction to a variety of materials. Both Jack and Kohdai were inspired to continue their own artistry in the final project.
